What we know

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PlayStation 5 on September 15. Ahead of release, Insomniac Games developers have outlined the thinking behind their take on Logan, built as a closer, more physical, and more grounded experience than the studio’s Spider-Man games.

Creative director Marcus Smith said the team began with the fundamental differences between the heroes. Spider-Man is tied to an open-world structure and New York, while Wolverine is designed around a more direct relationship with the environment, defined by contact and visceral action.

Claws, destruction, and a more physical Logan

For senior art director Grant Hollis, the claws—and therefore combat—were the essential elements to get right. The studio sees Logan as a tough, less delicate character who will break more things as he moves through the world. That approach informs both visuals and animation, with an emphasis on blood, destruction, and damage dealt to Wolverine and his enemies.

Senior animation director Brian Wyser added that Logan is portrayed as a man trained in every martial art, while his combat style is built around brawling and tearing through multiple opponents. Animation is also intended to bring out Wolverine’s animal side: the team used a quadrupedal stride at the start of a run as a reference point for his traversal.

Logan’s rage will carry narrative as well as mechanical weight. Smith tied it to the treatment of mutants as scientific experiments who are discarded. Game director Mike Daly said the interactive format allows players to do more than watch that conflict unfold; they can experience that difficult-to-control anger themselves.

A classic-inspired suit with a tactical finish

The Battle Reborn suit takes cues from two classic color combinations for the character: brown and yellow, and yellow and blue with red accents. Insomniac ultimately chose to pair the yellow with more black than brown.

Hollis said the goal was to retain that earlier inspiration while fitting it into a more grounded story and universe. As a result, the outfit has a tactical edge, drawing from real-world items such as military gear, motorcycle protection, and body armor that could plausibly be fabricated.

Allies, rivals, and conflict within Team X

The story brings Logan together with Sabretooth, Mystique, and Jean Grey. The team selected those relationships for the conflict they can create around an introverted protagonist who would rather be alone in his cabin.

Sabretooth and Logan share a connection from their Team X past, described as a shifting relationship between brotherhood and antagonism. Mystique will bring a different outlook across the game. Jean Grey and Logan are linked by a shared obligation to protect the most vulnerable, even if their methods and considerations can differ.

The Reavers and the Hand are among the enemy forces. Daly said the Reavers fit as deadly cyborg mercenaries with the weapons, armor, endurance, and numbers needed to credibly challenge Wolverine. The Hand provides fighters trained in ancient tactics and equipped with lethal weapons, with both groups serving mission objectives and story progression.

Narrative director Walt Williams also highlighted Liam McIntyre’s performance as Logan. The studio worked with the actor to create a version capable of conveying the character’s ferocity and animal rage as well as his gentler, compassionate side. For the team, that duality is crucial: Logan’s anger stems from a deep emotional core.

Insomniac wants players to enjoy the visceral action of playing as Wolverine while also understanding the suffering, loss, and sacrifice of the man behind the claws. Marvel’s Wolverine arrives on PS5 on September 15.
