NHL 27 launches with 32 arena atmospheres and more dynamic broadcast presentation

EA SPORTS NHL 27 is now available. To mark the launch, producer Nick Riley outlined the presentation and authenticity features at the center of this year’s release: distinct environments for all 32 NHL arenas, a dynamic direction system called The Orchestrator, refreshed broadcast graphics, and a new commentary duo.

Goal songs, chants, and traditions for every arena

Authentic Atmospheres brings authentic goal songs to all 32 NHL teams and arenas, alongside crowd chants and local traditions. EA points to the Rangers’ song, originally written for the team in the 1990s, and Pantera’s “Puck Off” version used by the Dallas Stars as examples.

The team also held a recording session with fans to capture cheers and chants performed alongside the music. The aim is for each building to carry a more distinct identity after goals and throughout a game.

The Orchestrator changes the direction after every whistle

NHL 27 replaces fixed post-play sequences with The Orchestrator, a system designed to function like a virtual TV producer. Following goals, penalties, and generally any whistle, it selects camera angles and moments based on what is happening in that particular game.

That can mean cutting to celebrating fans in the stands or focusing on players during moments such as their post-goal skate-by. Riley said the varying combinations of fans, shots, and situations are intended to keep celebration sequences from playing out in the same way.

The feature is part of the studio’s effort to combine two sides of the hockey experience: the feeling of being in the arena and the perspective of watching through a television or streaming broadcast.

Refreshed broadcast package and new voices

This entry also overhauls its broadcast graphics package. The update covers motion graphics, lower-third scorer identifiers, introductory sequences, and team information, including scoring details and the history of matchups against an opponent.

John Buccigross and Darren Pang take over in the booth. EA says they are the first new play-by-play voices in the series in seven years. The pair took part in more than 40 studio recording sessions, providing material intended to add greater depth and variety to the commentary.

For players, the changes are focused on how each game is presented, from the home arena’s audio response to the shots shown after stoppages and the information delivered during the broadcast.
