What we know
Fate/Extra Record will launch worldwide for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on January 28, 2027. The date was announced during State of Play alongside a new trailer for this retelling of the Moon Holy Grail War.
Developed by Type-Moon, the game is a full remake of Fate/Extra, the RPG originally released in Japan in July 2010. The new version expands the story, refreshes character visuals, and updates the presentation for modern platforms. Its gameplay has also been rebuilt around strategic, deck-building Command Card Battles.
The Moon Holy Grail War
The story takes place after humanity discovers the Moon Cell Automaton, a supercomputer concealed on the moon. It creates the Holy Grail, a machine able to grant any wish, and hosts a tournament in the digital world of SE.RA.PH. There, 128 Masters enter the conflict, each fighting alongside a Servant—a hero drawn from human history.
Players take the role of a Master with no memory of how they became involved in the war. Survival depends on forming a contract with a Servant and competing until only one participant remains.
Progression involves gathering information on opposing Servants to uncover their True Names, which are tied to their fighting styles and weaknesses. Players must also explore Arena areas, overcome traps and enemies, and strengthen their partner before qualifying for Decisive Battles. These one-on-one confrontations pit two Servants, commanded by their Masters, against each other; defeat means forfeiting both the tournament and the Master's life.
Command Card Battles and three Servants
Combat now centers on customizable Command Card decks. Attack Commands deal damage, Guard Commands build a shield to reduce incoming damage, and Skill Commands provide their own individual effects. Since available Commands differ by Servant, each character calls for a different approach in battle.
New Commands can be acquired from treasure chests in the Arena and by defeating powerful enemies. Players will choose from three Servants for the Moon Holy Grail War, with each offering distinct abilities, strengths, and fighting styles.
Alongside standard digital editions on PS5 and PS4, Fate/Extra Record will receive a Digital Deluxe Edition. It includes the digital game, multiple cosmetic costumes, an arranged music pack from the original Fate/Extra, and digital versions of the art book and soundtrack included with the physical Limited Edition.
