What we know

Overwatch will bring its current story to a close in Season 5 with the arrival of Doctrine, a new support hero inspired by a vampire. At BlizzCon 2026, the development team also unveiled the Grímsvötn Escort map and outlined major changes for Sombra and Roadhog.

Doctrine is the ninth hero added to Overwatch in 2026. While his concept draws on a vampiric villain, he fills the support role, with a backstory tied to handling life energy and deciding who lives or dies. Aaron Keller said Doctrine will play a major part in the conclusion of the story the game has been advancing throughout the year.

His weapon is a precision-focused scepter that can heal allies and damage enemies. His toolkit also includes a damage-reducing dash and drones that heal teammates while speeding up their attacks. Its core mechanic can empower his other abilities: an enhanced dash allows him to fly, empowered drones heal him and increase his own attack speed, and an empowered scepter pierces through targets. The team describes him as a high-skill-ceiling hero because of both his aiming demands and tactical choices.

Sombra moves to Support as Roadhog loses some one-shot power

Sombra is moving out of the Damage role and into Support. She will retain core parts of her identity, including stealth and hacking, but ability hacking will now be tied to her ultimate. The change is intended to make her contributions more consistently visible to her own team, including through healing, while preserving moments where she can operate away from her allies.

Roadhog, meanwhile, is gaining an ability that absorbs incoming enemy damage rather than simply taking it with his body. The team is also reducing his ability to secure one-shot eliminations. His primary weapon will fire in a two-hit rhythm, giving targets more time to respond after being pulled in by his hook.

Grímsvötn takes Overwatch to a high-security prison

The new Escort map, Watchpoint Grímsvötn, is set in Iceland and is described as the planet's highest-security prison. Some of Overwatch's most dangerous criminals had been held there for years, including Doomfist before his escape.

The map depicts the aftermath of a recent battle. Its details include the Sentinel robot destroyed by Doomfist at the end of the cinematic and the cell where Doomfist himself was confined. Players will also be able to find references to other characters who have been imprisoned at the facility.

The developers further teased an unidentified character previously shown only as a silhouette, saying that figure will have a major role in next year's story. No identity or further details were shared.

The team also said its next Spotlight presentation will aim to surprise players with a different formula from this year's event, featuring new gameplay, heroes, and other community-requested additions.
