Konami’s new action game Rhapsody in Scarlet announced for PS5
Set in 1920s New York, the adventure combines magic, beasts and customizable combos with Ellie in the lead role.

What we know
Konami Digital Entertainment has announced Rhapsody in Scarlet for PlayStation 5 during State of Play and State of Play Japan. The new action game takes place in a version of 1920s New York where jazz, fantasy, and a hidden struggle between magic users collide.
The story follows Ellie Myers, a young magus who comes to the city hoping to pursue a career as a jazz singer. After an incident, she becomes caught up in the schemes of a mysterious mafia organization and meets Ilya Jones, the leader of a magus group called the Seekers. Ellie values freedom while Ilya prioritizes order, putting the pair at odds, but they eventually fight together against a threat that could disrupt the balance of the world.
Magic-and-beast combo combat
Combat is built around the combination of magic and beast companions. Ellie fights alongside Sköll, her beast companion, and can link close- and long-range attacks, area spells, and beast techniques. Konami describes the combo system as highly customizable, allowing players to find combinations suited to their style and adapt them to particular enemies and situations.
The reveal included a first trailer focused on the action, as well as a story trailer shown during State of Play Japan that spotlights the narrative and its characters.
A fantastical take on 1920s New York
The team has aimed to recreate the atmosphere of 1920s New York through its architecture, fashion, automobiles, and Prohibition-era speakeasies. It conducted on-site research and collected historical references for the setting, then layered in fantasy elements including beasts, magic, and a district inhabited by magic users.
Its soundtrack will also draw inspiration from jazz of the period, intended to bring swing-influenced sound together with the action. Rhapsody in Scarlet is now available to wishlist on PS5, and Konami says more details will be shared in the future.
