Grounded 2’s Rot and Ruin update adds the Centipede, termites and a 51% smaller PC install

Obsidian has released Rot and Ruin, Grounded 2’s latest major update. It adds the Woodpile area, brings termites back, introduces the Centipede as a boss, a new Buggy and a way to upgrade your gear, and cuts the game’s PC install size from 37 GB to 18 GB.

Out now on every platform

The update arrived on Tuesday, October 20: that evening, the official Grounded account announced it was available for all players, and Obsidian published the patch notes, including a section of fixes made between the public test build and the live version. Grounded 2 is playable on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass, PS5, and PC via Steam.

The game is still in development on every platform: it has been in Game Preview on Xbox since July 29, 2025, and in early access on Steam since that same date and on PS5 since August 11, 2026. Obsidian is sticking to a 2027 target for version 1.0. Much of Rot and Ruin’s content has been testable since October 6 on the public test build (version 0.6.0).

The Woodpile, termites and the Centipede

The headline addition is the Woodpile, a new adventure area of towering structures and winding passages that termites have made their home. Workers and Soldiers return, alongside a Queen and the Termite King, plus new O.G.R.R. variants. Obsidian warns that these aren’t quite the termites players remember, with new attacks and some strange behavior.

Above them sits the Centipede, one of the community’s most-requested creatures, which arrives as a boss. It brings a new mutation and trinket, a staff, its own armor set and themed furniture. There are also Termite armor pieces, a Splinter Canon and a Centi-Cultist armor set, and the update adds four new mutations in total.

Potato Beetle, painting and tiered gear

The new Buggy is the Potato Beetle. It’s bigger than the Ladybug and built for close-range combat: it fires a spread of projectiles forward, has a charged shot for groups of enemies and a Healing Roar. It can also haul resources and contribute materials to building blueprints.

Builders get painting: craft paint and apply it with the Splotcher, a paintball gun that colors walls, floors, roofs, stairs and doors. For gear, Bismuth, a new resource tied to the Raw Science beneath the park, lets you upgrade weapons and armor to higher tiers at the new Yoking Press.

There’s more: a Perfect Dodge that avoids damage and doesn’t use stamina, quick mutation loadout swapping from the radial menu, eight SCA.B color schemes and five collectible figurines that can be displayed as statues in your base.

Half the space on PC

On the technical side, the game moves to Unreal Engine 5.7 and Obsidian cites large performance improvements. It also takes up less space on every platform: the 51% figure refers to the PC install size, which drops from 37 GB to 18 GB, while consoles save just 200 to 300 MB. According to Neowin, the PC version redownloads in full, at the new size. The patch also fixes dozens of quest, multiplayer and stability bugs, including several crashes on PS5 and PC.

Grounded 2 is developed by Obsidian Entertainment and Eidos-Montréal and published by Xbox Game Studios. On Steam it costs €29.99 in Spain.
