Quarantine Zone gets free Miami Zero expansion, out now on Xbox, PC and Game Pass

Zombie checkpoint simulator Quarantine Zone: The Last Check gets Miami Zero today, its biggest addition yet. It's a prequel set in Miami at the start of the outbreak, and it's free for every owner of the game on Xbox Series X|S and PC, including through Game Pass.

A prequel at ground zero

Miami Zero takes Brigada Games and Devolver Digital's game to the sunny, and often rainy, streets of Miami just as the virus starts to spread. The core loop stays the same: inspect survivors, spot symptoms and decide who gets through. According to the team on Xbox Wire, it's by far the biggest update since the game launched in January.

The expansion adds a new campaign with its own story, quests and characters. One of those quests runs across the whole campaign and has you recruit survivors to repair a luxury yacht and escape the city.

What's new

There are more than 30 unique survivors, each with their own personality, voice lines, look and reactions, plus more body types and animations. New symptoms arrive too, such as suspicious scars, rotten organs and stomach parasites, along with an extra layer of inspection: finding contraband drugs hidden under a hat, in a fist or even swallowed.

A new research centre lets you run experiments on the infected, with results that can include mutants dangerous to the checkpoint. According to the Steam announcement, there's also a medicine research and development system. And yes, you can now feed the infected to sharks, although the team recommends making sure they really are infected first.

Free, no fine print

The setting adds a dynamic weather system, with sunshine, dust storms and tropical rain, plus new locations such as a pier, city streets and a music festival. The original campaign has also been tweaked and improved.

Miami Zero is available now on Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, and it's free for anyone who owns the base game. On Steam you just update the game; the developers stress there's no fine print and no time limit. Official sources only mention those platforms.
