Final Fantasy Resonance PS5 Demo Is Available Now, Sephiroth Confirmed

A free Final Fantasy Resonance demo is now available on PlayStation 5. Announced during the September 3 State of Play, it includes the complete first chapter and lets players carry their save data into the full release.

Square Enix has also confirmed that Sephiroth will appear in the game. Players will be able to find and challenge him in an attempt to earn a special reward. His role was revealed in the new trailer shown during the presentation.

A Final Fantasy built in HD-2D

The game is built around the idea of pushing pixel art further. Its story follows a journey to protect the Crystals scattered across the world and stop Veritas of the Dark, who seeks to destroy it.

Resonance uses high-definition pixel art in an HD-2D style, alongside familiar Final Fantasy features including chocobos and airships. Its opening and other cinematic scenes use a process that renders 3D CG in pixel form, aiming to retain the pixel-art look in more dynamic sequences.

Battles, visions, and espers

Final Fantasy Resonance evolves the series' turn-based command battles. A timeline displays the upcoming action order for both allies and enemies, while emptying an opponent's stagger gauge stops them from taking their turn and lowers their defense. Reading that order is a key part of planning effective strategies.

The vision system lets players acquire crystallized essences of characters encountered throughout the story. Equipping visions and winning battles unlocks abilities. After an ability is learned, it can remain equipped with a different active vision as long as it fits within the cost limit; certain combinations create stronger synergies. Vision crystal sanctums found around the world will also provide visions of legacy Final Fantasy heroes.

Players can additionally unlock summons called espers by progressing through the story and completing side quests. Espers fight beside the party for three turns, then perform a finishing move before leaving. Visions can also trigger special moves known as resonances at the end of the Extra Phase when a Sweeping Stagger occurs.

The demo offers access to the opening story chapter as well as the battle system. Since progress transfers, players who try it can continue their save in the complete PS5 game on October 22.
