What we know

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the major Monster Hunter Wilds expansion currently in development for PS5, is planned for release in 2027. A hands-on session at Tokyo Game Show 2026 has offered an early look at its Boost Action combat mechanic, the Skybound Eyrie area, and hunts involving the new monster Araketa and the Elder Dragon Teostra.

The expansion will add a new storyline, areas, monsters, actions, and Master Rank. The demo featured three quest types: a Chatacabra hunt, a hunt for a boss variant of Araketa, and a battle with Teostra.

Boost Action adds new offensive options

Boost Action is triggered with the Boost Bracer. For a limited time, it enables weapon-specific attacks and enhances certain weapon actions. Its gauge builds gradually and also rises with every successful hit.

The system can be activated in the middle of a combo or after an attack ends, allowing hunters to keep their offensive momentum going. Destroying wounds with a Focus Strike while Boost Action is active also replenishes the draining gauge. That means a well-timed wound break just before the effect ends can extend an attack sequence.

In the Sword and Shield portion of the preview, the activation move provided fast movement while attacking. It could be used to close in on a distant target before launching boosted combos, or to quickly shift to a monster’s flank at close range.

Araketa hunts in packs at Skybound Eyrie

The Araketa quest took place in Skybound Eyrie, a region of floating islands. Riding a Seikret lets hunters use updrafts to rise into the air and glide between the landmasses.

Araketa hunts in groups. Since this demo run did not include Dung Bombs to separate the pack, the encounter required fighting multiple creatures at once. The monster inflates its wings to blow hunters back or propel itself into powerful charges, with a major expansion of those wings signaling an incoming attack.

The boss variant coordinates its pack through commands. Its allies can leap in one after another and perform a group attack that sees the entire pack jump up before diving rapidly onto its target. The boss exposes a vulnerable point on its throat when it roars, however, and a successful Focus Strike there stops its commands.

The area also gives hunters a way to use Gundoraja, a small creature with a tough outer covering. When curled up, it can be picked up and thrown at Araketa. Hitting such a quick-moving target demands accuracy, but the impact can stagger the monster.

Teostra gains new attack patterns

The demo concluded with Teostra in the Oilwell Basin. Alongside familiar actions including charges, fire breath, and blast explosions, the Elder Dragon displayed attack patterns not previously seen in the preview.

One has Teostra stand up and smash both forelegs into the ground. It can turn while remaining upright to face the hunter again, but the session showed that the Switch Axe’s Offset Rising Slash can deflect the strike when timed correctly.

Oilwell Basin’s terrain makes the battle more difficult: thick oil mud can impede movement just as Teostra’s scattered dust warns of an imminent explosion. Focus Mode, wound destruction, and Boost Action provided ways to trade attacks with the monster, though the preview quest ended in failure after recovery items ran out and time expired.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is coming to PS5 in 2027.
