BeamNG.drive is out on PS5 in early access with four-player split-screen

Driving and physics simulator BeamNG.drive has made the jump to console. It’s now available on PS5 in early access for $24.99, arrives alongside the big version 0.40 update that introduces local split-screen for up to four players, and launches without mods or VR, at least for now.

Available since October 19

BeamNG.drive went on sale on PlayStation Store on Monday, October 19, priced at $24.99 in the US and €21.99 in Spain. It’s published by the studio itself, BeamNG GmbH, and the store listing includes on-screen text in several languages, Spanish among them.

As on PC, where it has been in early access on Steam since May 2015, the PS5 version also launches in early access. The PlayStation Store listing makes it clear: the game is still in development, and players will be able to follow its evolution as the team keeps improving and expanding it. BeamNG announced in May that it would come to PS5 this year and set the date in September.

Four-player split-screen and seven modes

The PS5 version arrives at the same time as version 0.40 on PC, and its headline feature is one of the community’s most-requested: local split-screen. On PS5 it supports up to four players (on PC, up to 64, if anyone has the friends and the hardware). It works in Freeroam, where each player gets a random vehicle, or in seven competitive modes: Race, Drag Race, Pursuit, Derby, Drift, Rock Crawling and even Soccer.

Version 0.40 also adds physical occupants. Passengers, led by Bob, actually sit in the vehicle, add 89 kg each and react to the driving with the same physics as everything else. In split-screen, a player can also get out of their car and hop into a friend’s.

The launch is rounded out by a new truck, the Cherrier Percheron: an early-2000s European cab-over with more than 50 chassis setups, a 12.8-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 310 to 500 hp and the studio’s most interactive interior yet. There’s also a new onboarding tutorial, First Drive.

PS5 Pro, wheels and what’s missing

According to BeamNG’s press release, the PS5 version uses FSR 3 on the standard console and PSSR on PS5 Pro. The studio’s blog adds that it supports force feedback on a list of popular wheels, including the Logitech G29 and G923, the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD PRO and the Thrustmaster T300 RS and T248. BeamNG warns that other PS5 wheels haven’t been tested yet.

What isn’t arriving for now is mods and VR. BeamNG says it aims for feature parity across platforms “where possible” in the long term, but can’t confirm timing or scope yet. On mods, the press release goes further: they won’t be supported on PlayStation at launch, and mod authoring tools are not currently planned for the console.
