What we know

Blizzard has announced Diablo V, due in 2029, at BlizzCon 2026. The new entry is set in a post-apocalyptic Sanctuary where Diablo has already won, changing the series’ usual starting point: survivors will face a desolate world with little hope left and Hell established within Sanctuary.

Speaking on the Official Xbox Podcast, Diablo team members said the game will explore the consequences of Diablo’s invasion through both its story and the world’s visual design. The team is pursuing an even darker, more sin-focused direction, including the idea of Hell outposts built in Sanctuary.

One of Diablo V’s core development goals is to deliver the best campaign in the franchise. Blizzard intends to build on Diablo IV’s work in cinematic presentation and storytelling, then take it further in the new game. Developers also said the project is informed by the broad range of Diablo players, from those drawn to its story and dark-fantasy tone to those focused on character builds, loot, and playing with friends.

Diablo IV marks 30 years with Season of Hell’s Legacy

While Diablo V remains in development, Diablo IV has launched its 15th season, Season of Hell’s Legacy. Designed as a celebration of 30 years of Diablo, the season revisits parts of the series’ past.

Deckard Cain returns from the dead to guide players, accompanied by three Dark Wanderers. Players must defeat and redeem them to claim the power of the Prime Evils. Doing so grants Splinters of Evil, described as echoes of soulstones.

Each splinter unlocks a signature power that can be upgraded and altered as it levels up. Progress with these splinters also affects the War Plans trees, adding modifiers to endgame activities. One example is the Splinter of Destruction, which is tied to Baal.

Mephisto will also remain part of Season of Hell’s Legacy following his World Boss takeover in the BlizzCon demo. The podcast says players will need to search for him in Skovos.

The Amazon arrives in the first half of 2027

Blizzard also confirmed that the Amazon will join Diablo IV as a new class in the first half of 2027. Her arrival will introduce a new weapon type as well: the javelin.

The team describes the Amazon as a disciplined soldier with a lethal but controlled combat style. Her kit will support long-range bow attacks, while the javelin will allow players to move quickly between mid-range and melee combat.

The class will have four archetypes: ranger, skirmisher, champion, and commander. The skirmisher is built around moving in, unleashing attacks, and pulling back out. The champion uses sword and shield for close-quarters fighting, but in a more deliberate style than the Barbarian, with tools such as supportive banners. The commander, meanwhile, can lead Valkyries and Vallochs into battle alongside her sisters.

Finally, Blizzard announced a Diablo animated series in partnership with Netflix. No further details were shared, though Blizzard said the collaboration is intended to expand Sanctuary’s stories to more people.
