Modern Warfare 4 will open DMZ on October 20 for digital pre-orders
Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's extraction mode will be playable three days before the October 23 launch for players who have digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition.

Three dates to note
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's schedule now looks like this: campaign early access begins on Friday, October 16, all of DMZ opens on Tuesday, October 20, and the general launch, which adds multiplayer, follows on Friday, October 23. Activision confirmed the dates on October 9 on the official Call of Duty blog, and Xbox Wire repeated them the same day.
Until now only campaign early access had been announced. What is new is that DMZ, the game's extraction mode, is also part of that early window, so eligible players can try two of its main pillars before launch.
Who gets in early
Early access is for players who have digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition. According to the official blog, the benefit applies on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Physical copies do not unlock these early phases.
Activision has not yet given an exact unlock time and warns that start dates may vary because of time zones, possible outages and platform availability.
What DMZ is in Modern Warfare 4
DMZ takes place in Hajin, a new map inspired by the campaign and set after its events. It is an open area mixing fights against AI-controlled enemies and other players: the goal is to loot, complete objectives and reach extraction to keep what you have earned.
There are three ways to deploy: story missions, with replayable narrative objectives; dynamic operations, which set in-match goals in exchange for experience, DMZ cash and a supply drop; and free roam.
Base, crafting and persistent Operators
Between matches, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) acts as a command centre. Its centrepiece is a 3D printer that turns recovered materials into gear and upgrades. There are four basic resources (synthetics, electronics, chemicals and metals) plus rarer ingredients found only in specific parts of Hajin.
Each player starts with two Operator slots and unlocks a third through progression; the Vault Edition starts with three. Operators earn trait points by surviving, up to a maximum of 18, to spend across three trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist, with 66 traits available. If an Operator is eliminated during a deployment and goes missing in action (MIA), players must either pay DMZ cash to recover them, at a cost that rises with the Trait Points they have, or dismiss them. Recovered Operators keep their traits but lose their gear.
Why it matters
DMZ is not new to the series: it debuted in 2022 as a free mode tied to Modern Warfare II and Warzone. This version is built into the paid game with deeper progression, and it was not playable in the open beta. Opening it three days before launch is also a clear incentive to pre-order digitally just weeks before GTA VI arrives on November 19.
